MG Motor South Africa joined the MG Car Club community at its annual Indaba in Johannesburg, bringing together the British marque’s heritage, its loyal enthusiast base and a preview of the next generation of MG vehicles headed for South Africa.

Classic MG models took centre stage at the event’s Concours, showing off the sporting character that has defined the badge for more than a century. MG was born from a desire to make driving exciting, and its cars were built to be felt rather than simply driven.

The Cyberster bridged old and new

Alongside the historic cars, MG displayed its current local line-up, including the MG Cyberster. The electric roadster best captures the brand’s focus on performance and driving enjoyment, while showcasing its modern approach to design and electric technology.

An early look at what's coming

The Indaba also gave enthusiasts and the motoring media a glimpse of MG’s plans. A select group of journalists was treated to an exclusive showing of new MG products set to arrive in South Africa in the coming month, offering an early look at the brand’s expansion into new segments of the market.

“MG has an incredible heritage and a very passionate community of owners and enthusiasts in South Africa,” says Jack Wang, VP for Sales and Marketing at MG Motor South Africa. “This passionate spirit was born from MG’s storied past and maintained for decades.”

“The MG Car Club Indaba gave us a great opportunity to celebrate where the brand comes from while sharing our excitement for where MG is heading. Having the classic cars, our current models and our upcoming products together created a unique picture of MG’s journey and allowed us to bring owners and enthusiasts of classic MG vehicles closer to owners of MG today.”

Why the club connection matters

MG’s enthusiast following traces back to its rise in international motorsport during the 1950s and 1960s. That success turned the brand into a symbol of freedom, style and youthfulness through the 1970s and 1980s.

The MG Car Club reflects that legacy. Its members span generations, from owners who have carefully preserved some of the brand’s most iconic historic models to newcomers discovering the latest MG vehicles. That link to the past remains important as MG builds its modern presence in South Africa.

Hybrids and PHEVs on the horizon

Since its official return to the local market in January 2025, MG has steadily grown its portfolio across hatchbacks, SUVs and performance models. The range combines distinctive design, technology, driving enjoyment and attainable refinement, drawing on the global engineering resources of SAIC Motor.

The next phase will bring further new models into additional segments, including Hybrid and PHEV derivatives, giving South African buyers more ways into the brand.

“A fun and rewarding driving experience has been a fundamental part of every MG produced over the past century and is a part of our brand DNA that will remain a key differentiator of the brand in South Africa,” adds Wang. “As we embark on this exciting journey of introducing more exciting MG models to more South Africans, we believe that the engineering expertise that underpins our modern and often class-leading powertrain technology will attract more customers who value driving enjoyment and intelligent technology in equal measure to an undeniable value proposition.”
